From the Doctor’s Desk: Solving the Varicose Vein Dilemma

As a physician, I want to offer solutions to the health issues my patients complain of the most. And a frequent complaint is varicose veins.

Seasons now offers the latest advancement in varicose vein treatment: endovenous laser therapy, also known as Varilase. With the addition of Varilase, Seasons now provides a comprehensive vein treatment strategy which includes sclerotherapy, phlebectomy, and Varilase.

If you have friends who’ve experienced failures in varicose vein treatment, there’s a good reason. In fact, many who suffer with varicose veins don’t seek treatment because current therapies don’t always work. Varilase is unique. It is a treatment focused on the cause rather than the symptoms

This makes it a great fit for Seasons where we remain committed to treating the cause of health problems and not just the symptoms.

So What Is Varilase?

It is an in-office procedure where I use a small fiber laser to close the greater and lesser saphenous veins, the cause of most varicose veins. The procedure takes about 30-45 minutes. Patients can walk immediately following the procedure, bruising is minimal, and pain is almost non-existent. (In fact, our first client walked 3 miles that evening … I don’t encourage that, but she did without any problem.)

The appearance of unsightly, twisted and swollen veins is certainly the most obvious complaint associated with varicose veins.

Since My Veins Don’t Look Bad, This Doesn’t Apply To Me. Right?

There are other symptoms which could make you consider Varilase. Your legs may not look lumpy, but you may already have venous insufficiency if you experience these symptoms:

  • Swelling, throbbing, or cramping at night
  • Difficulty walking
  • Leg swelling
  • Restless legs
  • Itching and burning of legs
  • Venous ulcers on legs

If you have any of these symptoms, call our office to schedule a screening. During the screening process, we can determine if your symptoms are caused by venous insufficiency and also determine if you are a candidate for the Varilase procedure.

Varilase is offered at our Ruston medical office: Seasons Women’s Care, 411 E. Vaughn Ave., Suite 201, Ruston, LA. You can contact us at 318-255-3223 to schedule your screening.

As Oliver Wendell Holmes once said, “It is not so much where we stand, but in what direction we are moving.” At Seasons, our goal is wellness, health solutions, and great customer service. And Varilase is a step in a good direction.

Seasons Ruston Offers Solution for Varicose Veins

It’s here! Seasons Ruston is now offering Varilase, a new alternative in the treatment of varicose veins. This procedure, called endovenous laser therapy, is a non-surgical method of resolving the unsightly, painful and potentially dangerous effects of varicose veins. Lasers are a proven means of treating many medical conditions because of their inherent precision, reliability and safety. The application of lasers to the treatment of varicose veins is a welcome, non-surgical alternative and is performed at our fully equipped Ruston medical office.

In endovenous laser therapy, a small incision is made into the varicose vein, which has been numbed with a local anesthetic. A very thin laser fiber is then inserted into the vein and directed to the desired treatment location. When the laser is activated, thermal energy is delivered, causing the vein to close. The laser fiber is gradually withdrawn until the entire diseased vessel is treated. The whole procedure lasts less than one hour. After treatment, patients can walk immediately and return to normal activities.

Dr. Goodyear is very pleased to offer this new therapy to patients. “Endovenous laser therapy is a very patient-friendly procedure,” he said. “It can be done right in the office, and the results are excellent. Before this therapy was developed, the only effective treatment for large varicose veins was vein stripping, an invasive surgical procedure with a lengthy recovery period. Now, these same patients can be treated in the office, and the procedure is often covered by insurance. Because the therapy is both effective and cost-effective, more and more patients are choosing to have their veins treated by the laser. Endovenous laser therapy is a major advancement in treatment of varicose veins.”

To counteract the forces of gravity, veins have valves that prevent blood from flowing backwards as it is pumped back toward the heart. Over time, these valves can weaken, allowing blood to pool inside the vein. This can cause the vein to distend, resulting in the “rope-like” appearance commonly associated with varicose veins. This condition can lead to a range of serious circulatory problems, including blood clots, leg ulcers and poor circulation. Varicose veins are a very common problem – approximately 25% of women and 15% of men in the United States suffer from this condition. Women are more prone to suffer from varicose veins because of pregnancy, and heredity has been shown to be a contributory factor as well.
