Medi-Spa, Botox and Fillers Defined: Q&A with Anna Stephens, WHNP
What is a Medi-Spa (Medical Spa)?
A medical spa is a hybrid between a medical clinic and a day spa that operates under the supervision of a physician. Dr. Nathan Goodyear is the overseeing physician at Seasons – The Spa and Seasons Medical Aesthetics. The spa menus at medi-spas will vary, but you can usually receive treatments such as laser hair removal, IPL (intense pulsed light) treatments, microdermabrasion, photofacials, injectables like Botox and dermal fillers, and chemical peels. For a the spa menu at Seasons, visit: www.seasonswc.com.
Compared to other day and medi-spas, what makes Seasons the best choice?
We are constantly learning, evolving, adding services, and exploring new technologies to offer our clients the superior service they have come to expect. Our clients are not the only ones who have noticed! Seasons – The Spa was named ‘Best of the Delta – Best Medi-Spa 2010′ by Delta Style Magazine and Seasons was voted ‘Best Small Business 2010′ by Ruston-Lincoln Chamber of Commerce and Louisiana Tech University College of Business.
What types of training have you received for medical spa procedures?
I attend advanced training every 4-6 months with a clinical trainer from Merz Aesthetics, makers of Radiesse dermal filler. I’ve also attended training with Empire Medical in 2008 and again in 2010. Empire Medical offers a more general type of training including Botox and many types of dermal fillers. In addition, I’ve received advanced training from Allergan, makers of Botox and Juvederm.
How much experience have you had with facial fillers in the lips or nasolabial folds?
I have been injecting this area for over 3 years.
How will I choose the filler that is safest and best for me?
At your personal consultation, we will discuss your beauty goals as well as discuss different options available. After determining what areas most concern you, we will decide which filler best suits your needs. Not all fillers can be used in all areas of the face.
Does insurance cover medi-spa procedures or is financing available?
The type of medical insurance that most of us have will not cover medical spa procedures. These procedures are considered cosmetic by almost all insurance companies. Fortunately, the cost involved for most medical spa procedures is minimal and there are other options for paying for medical spa procedures such as credit cards and Care Credit financing. For more information about Care Credit, please contact our Ruston office at 318.255.1155.
Supersonic Skin Care For Softer, Smoother Skin: It’s Clarisonic!
Clarisonic’s innovative technology vibrates at 300 movements per second to clean, soften and smooth your skin. The Clarisonic Skin Care System is safe for all skin types and gentle enough for use twice a day – in the shower or over the sink. You will notice a reduction in the appearance of pores, improved skin tone, a reduction in fine lines and wrinkles, and improved absorption of serums and moisturizers. Clarisonic PRO, $195. Clarisonic Mia, $149.
Your Clarisonic questions – answered!

What are the benefits of the Clarisonic Mia?
- Cordless

- Comes with an international charger
- 1 speed
- Waterproof for use in the shower

What are the different types of brush heads?
The brush heads available are: Normal, Sensitive, Delicate, and Deep Pore. These brush heads are compatible on both the Mia and PRO. All of the brush heads plus the Body Brush is available for the PRO model (Body Brush not available for the Mia).
What brush head came with my Clarisonic?
- Clarisonic Mia Sonic Cleansing System: Sensitive Brush Head.
- Clarisonic PRO Sonic Cleansing System: Sensitive Brush Head. (The Graphite Gray model comes with a Normal Brush Head.)
Which brush head is best for my skin?
Everyone’s skin is different, but here are some suggestions when choosing a brush head:
- The Normal brush head is slightly stiffer than the delicate and sensitive. This brush head is better if you want a deeper cleanse, if you don’t have sensitive skin, or if using on a man’s face.
- If you experience dry patches or irritation, you might want to try the sensitive or delicate brush head.
- The Sensitive brush head is the most popular brush and comes with most of the skin care systems.
- The Delicate brush head is designed for extra-sensitive skin or for those suffering from complicated skin conditions such as rosacea.
- The Deep Pore brush head is the newest addition to the family. This is a great brush head for someone who can’t seem to get rid of the black heads or has acne-prone skin.
When should I clean my brush heads? And what is the best way to remove the head from the brush?
Clarisonic suggests that you clean your brush head once a week using an antibacterial cleanser. For a more detailed tutorial on brush head cleaning, please read Clarisonic’s post “How do I clean my brush head.”
I have seen advertisements for similar skin cleansing systems. What makes the Clarisonic Skin Care System better?
Unlike most other skin care system imitators, the Clarisonic Skin Care System does not “spin”. The brush head oscillates (back and forth) to provide a more gentle cleansing. Face wash can be applied directly to the brush head without spinning off and making a mess. The oscillation movement works with the skin’s elasticity to provide the best clean while careful not to damage the skin. Some other skin care systems warn against getting the system close to your hair – yikes! The Clarisonic Skin Care System is safe to use around your hair because it oscillates instead of spins. You won’t have to worry about it leaving you with any bald spots!
Added bonus: unlike most skin care systems, Clarisonic offers you a warranty on their devices.
Tell me more about the warranty!
Yes, Clarisonic does provide a warranty for the PRO and Mia. The PRO has a 3-year warranty and the Mia has a 1-year warranty. If you have any problem whatsoever with your PRO or Mia, bring it to Seasons and we will exchange it for you that day. The serial number on handle of brush tells us when it was made and needs to be clearly visible. In the user manual, Clarisonic encourages customers to register the device on their website.

You Don’t Have To Be A Teen To Get Acne!

Lisa Best, Clinical Aesthetician
For years, acne mainly plagued teens and those in their 20’s. We are now seeing it in people who are in their 30’s, 40’s, 50’s and even 60’s. Where does this dreaded plague come from? Acne may develop from a variety of things including hormones, stress, and unfortunately, your inherited genes.
Food choices are a huge factor contributing to this dreaded skin problem. What you eat directly and indirectly affects your acne. This is one factor that we can easily control by being mindful of what goes into our bodies. So, here are a couple of things to remember:
- Take your vitamins. Whole foods multi-vitamins taken daily are a good choice to fight acne. Acidophilus B and garlic are also great acne fighters.
- An apple a day. Eat red or golden delicious apples daily.
- Drink water, water, water.
- Clear is better. Soda drinkers, change to clear sodas. The ingredients that make sodas dark can make acne worse.
- Go natural with your sweets. Too much refined sugar can aggravate acne. This means stay away from candy, sodas, cakes and pies! Try to use natural sweeteners, like honey or stevia!
Not only do we need to be cautious in making food choices, but we need to take care of our skin with good products! Here are a couple of ways to do that:
- Don’t wash TOO much! Over washing your skin can stimulate the sebaceous glands, causing breakouts. Twice daily is enough!
- Go BLUE! LED Blue light therapy greatly reduces acne-causing bacteria.
- Clean sleep. When you are experiencing breakouts, change your pillow case daily.
- Treat with tea tree. Tea Tree Oil is a great natural anti-bacterial apply to acne lesions, use as directed on bottle.
- Be careful with the POP! When done incorrectly picking, mashing, squeezing your acne can cause more flair up.Using fingernails to “POP” pimples will cause scarring.
- Opposite effect. Using antibiotics can actually increase the number of acne breakouts over time.
- Don’t rely on THE PILL. Using birth control pills will only clear breakouts for a short period of time if at all, and may even cause breakouts.
There is not just a simple cure for acne. I wish there were. However, I am dedicated in helping you customize YOUR fight with acne! Call us at Seasons, 255-1155, for more information or to schedule an appointment.
A Glimpse Into The Future!
Wouldn’t it be great to know what you will look like in 10 years? Or would it?
At Seasons, we think information is the key to wellness. The more you know, the more you can prevent. And we all know that “an ounce of prevention is worth much more than a pound of cure” according to Benjamin Franklin, one of the greatest inventors and thinkers in U.S. history.
We have a great invention to share with you called the Visia Complexion Analysis System. While we didn’t invent this technology, we think it’s important to the future of your skin. By taking a glimpse at your skin up close, we can give you a good idea of the progression of your skin without intervention over the next 10 years.
The Visia Complexion Analysis system is a camera unit that sends high-quality photographs to a computer which then analyzes the results. Our clients can see their complexion in relation to other clients of the same age and skin type. The Visia’s analysis of skin helps determine a treatment process for anti-aging, cosmetic face treatment and medical therapy.
Visia evaluates:
- Depth of your pores
- Individual analysis of the skin condition
- Measures wrinkles
- Analyzes pigment difficulties
- Detects UV damage
- Detects porphyrine and bacteria
The Visia Complexion Analysis takes about 15 minutes and is complimentary anytime you visit Seasons in Ruston.
Don’t be afraid to know the truth about your skin. It’s only when we see reality that we can make a good plan to prevent unwanted signs of aging through a Seasons skin treatment plan developed by one of our trained aestheticians. For an appointment, call 318-255-3223.
We Want You To Look Your Best
At Seasons, we love helping people look their best. We want every patient to be beautiful.
Our aestheticians are trained in microdermabrasion, chemical peels, electrolysis, permanent makeup, and Intense Photo Light therapy or IPL. (IPL is a way to use very strong flashes of light in place of lasers—for hair removal, acne, skin rejuvenation, hyper pigmentation, and very small spider veins.)
I have to stop there for a moment.
Most of this stuff wasn’t around when I was a kid suffering from acne. My brother and I just dealt with our zits. I think we had some medicated wipes for our faces or something. Even though we weren’t “greasers,” we were terrified by commercials like this one…
…but we had to wait until after acne before we found our miracle girls. (And we’ve both been married to our original sweethearts now for many years.) But back to medicine and skin care.
Over-the-counter skin care isn’t enough for many people. Seasons uses treatment like microdermabrasion, chemical peels, facials, electrolysis, and IPL to address all aspects of a patient’s skin care.
Take acne. Forget the commercial. At Seasons, we might first do a chemical peel to get down to that healthiest layer of skin. There are three layers to your skin—the epidermis, dermis, and hypodermis. A chemical peel takes off the top layer of skin—the old dead layer. This leaves you with a more youthful layer of skin, so you look more youthful. (Obagi Blue Peel is one of the brands that we use.)
Then we look for a skin product line that best fits the patient’s skin type—like deep cleansing facial products that gets into those pores and clean things out. IPL will actually kill the bacteria in those pores with acne.
We’re just looking at a multi-prong approach to acne—or any skin disorder.
There’s so many different skin types, you have to be careful what kind of product you use on your face. This is why I am cautious about over-the-counter cleansers for acne. You may be getting something that dries your skin out. If that’s not what your skin type needs, you could be making your acne even worse. The professionals at Seasons are able to evaluate each patient’s skin type and work through our protocol of skin care and product lines and treatment options.
Skin treatments are hardly the only thing we do, though. I am a doctor after all! If my patients need medicine, I can prescribe what they need.
On the other hand, if people just need an old fashioned pore extraction, we give them that, too.
