Black, White, and Gray in the World of Medicine
John 8:32 says, “You will know the truth and the truth will set you free.” As a Christian, I wholeheartedly believe that scripture. In that case, John was quoting Jesus Christ, and the truth of which he spoke was the truth of Jesus’ purpose for his life, death, and resurrection on this earth.
We hear that phrase thrown around in the everyday vernacular because it rings true for worldly topics, not just the heavenly. A good decision can only be made about a matter when the truth of opposing sides is known. Otherwise, any decision seems tainted in some way. Truth makes things clear and eliminates the gray in the black and white of the decision-making process.
So where is the gray in the world of healthcare? You don’t have to look far. In modern healthcare, physicians depend on the latest prescription drug to solve the problems of a symptomatic patient rather than delving deeper into the underlying physical chemistry. Having my practice dictated by which pharmaceuticals to dispense didn’t seem right in my soul. Where was the preventative care for the body? Was there a way to prevent disease and return the body to optimal health?
Truth in health and wellness is found in physiology and biochemistry. I, often begrudgingly, waded my way through the classes of organic chemistry, biochemistry, and physiology, not knowing that one day I would return to those roots as the fundamentals of my medical practice.
In returning to these fundamentals, I now spend time analyzing the body’s current function and, as naturally as possible, returning the body to optimal health.
Can I prevent disease? Well, not entirely. The overwhelmingly toxicity of our environment and the unique genetics of each person have a factor in disease, too. But the idea behind anti-aging and functional medicine is to provide my patients with the best quality of life possible for as long as they live instead of being debilitated by disease for years. It’s all about HEALTHY LIVING.
As I continue to practice medicine, I realize how important it is to EDUCATE. Health and wellness education is one of our primary missions at Seasons. It is the lack of wellness in north Louisiana which led me to seek further education in functional medicine (I am now board certified and fellowship trained in Functional Medicine) giving me the tools that I need to solve the health problems my patients deal with every day.
You see, I became a physician to help people get better and feel better. And because that wasn’t happening with the protocols currently being used by the American College of Gynecology, I sought a better way of doing things. But in doing so, I have also found that educating my patients, the community, the state of Louisiana, and even my fellow physicians is required. How to do that is the question!

Vaccinations and Autism – Is The Verdict In?
You might have heard the recent proclamation of the “end to the vaccination and autism link debate.” This proclamation comes from new light shed on one of the studies compiled by Dr. Andrew Wakefield, a British surgeon and medical researcher whose research indicated a link between autism and the MMR (measles-mumps-rubella) vaccination.
Dr. Wakefield is accused of falsifying some of the data to manipulate his statistics to show more significance, a claim Wakefield categorically denies. If this study from Wakefield et al. was the only study that showed evidence of the harm of vaccines, then I would join the chorus. However, the evidence supporting the harmful effects of vaccinations are not just present in one article. The evidence is present in many articles.
Manipulation of the statistics and fabrication of data is nothing new in science. But as I stated in my previous post, Is Medicine Losing Its Way?, with regard to vaccinations, medicine lost its way a long time ago. Because of this, I and many other physicians continue to push for a physiologic-based practice paradigm. Physiology can’t be manipulated like statistical studies can.
Let’s get a little perspective.
What do we know about some recent statistics surrounding vaccinations?
- First, in 1983, children only received 10 vaccinations before school. At that point the autism rate was 1:10,000. Currently, children receive 36 vaccinations before entry to school and the rate of autism has climbed to 1:150. Coincidence? Not if you look at the physiology.
- In 2010/2011, the flu vaccine was pulled from the market in Australia due to seizures in children. (Click here for more information.)
- Japan no longer requires the Hepatitis B vaccine.
- A recent verdict of $22.5 million was awarded to a man who contracted polio from a polio vaccine given to his daughter.
Second, what we do know about the negative effects of vaccinations.
- Vaccines create long-standing immune suppression.
- There is an increased risk of infection with vaccinations, further increasing brain inflammation and damage to the developing brain.
- Vaccinations cause a shift to the Th2 part of the immune system for much longer than normal, an abnormal response creating increased risk of autoimmune disease.
- A child’s brain reacts differently than an adult’s and is much more sensitive to inflammation.
- Toxins accumulate in the body from vaccines which contain ionic mercury and aluminum.
- Toxic exposure creates excitotoxicity, damage done by chronic microglial activation in the brain resulting in brain inflammation, damage to the developing brain, and increases risk of seizures.
- The aluminum found in vaccines is thought to cause macrophage myofasciitis which can result in severe brain injury, muscle aches and pains, and weakness.
- Vaccinations cause an increased risk of Alzheimer’s and other neurodegenerative diseases such as ALS, Parkinson’s, and dementia.
- Vaccinations cause increased destruction of the brain’s protection mechanism: catalase, glutathione, peroxidase, Super Oxide Dismutase.
- Vaccines can be contaminated, up to 60% according to studies.
First, do no harm.
Lost in the debate of vaccinations, is the “art of medicine.” As quoted by all physicians as they take the Hippocratic oath, “I will remember that there is art to medicine, as well as a science,” and “I will not give a deadly drug to anybody who asked for it, nor will I make a suggestion to this effect.” By endorsing the use of vaccinations, are we creating a new problem (increasing cases of autism) while ending another problem (reduced cases of polio, measles, mumps, rubella)?
As physicians, our oath was, and still is, to “first, do no harm.” As logic, thought, debate and questions are critical to learning, so we must continue to ask the tough questions. And one of those questions will continue to be whether there is a connection between autism and vaccinations. We must fulfill our charge to do no harm. Perhaps we should take another look at whether vaccinations are truly doing no harm.
The Hippocratic Oath:
I swear to fulfill, to the best of my ability and judgment, this covenant:
I will respect the hard-won scientific gains of those physicians in whose steps I walk, and gladly share such knowledge as is mine with those who are to follow.
I will apply, for the benefit of the sick, all measures [that] are required, avoiding those twin traps of overtreatment and therapeutic nihilism.
I will remember that there is art to medicine as well as science, and that warmth, sympathy, and understanding may outweigh the surgeon’s knife or the chemist’s drug.
I will not be ashamed to say “I know not,” nor will I fail to call in my colleagues when the skills of another are needed for a patient’s recovery.
I will respect the privacy of my patients, for their problems are not disclosed to me that the world may know. Most especially must I tread with care in matters of life and death. If it is given to me to save a life, all thanks. But it may also be within my power to take a life; this awesome responsibility must be faced with great humbleness and awareness of my own frailty. Above all, I must not play at God.
I will remember that I do not treat a fever chart, a cancerous growth, but a sick human being, whose illness may affect the person’s family and economic stability. My responsibility includes these related problems, if I am to care adequately for the sick.
I will prevent disease whenever I can, for prevention is preferable to cure.
I will remember that I remain a member of society, with special obligations to all my fellow human beings, those sound of mind and body as well as the infirm.
If I do not violate this oath, may I enjoy life and art, respected while I live and remembered with affection thereafter. May I always act so as to preserve the finest traditions of my calling and may I long experience the joy of healing those who seek my help.
And in case you are wondering, the answer to your question is no – my children no longer receive vaccinations.

Is Medicine Losing Its Way?
It seems to me that medicine is losing its way. I don’t mean to be an alarmist, but I am VERY concerned about the growing trend of polypharmacy. It’s a problem not just for people, in general, but specifically for children.
How bad is the problem? According to Mike Adams at NaturalNews, the percentage of children on prescription drugs is going up, up, up. Up to 25% of all children are on some kind of chronic prescription drug!
Just look at the numbers reported by the Wall Street Journal in an article entitled “So Young, and So Many Pills” (12.28.2010) and cited in this article by Dr. David Brownstein.
In 2009, prescriptions for children included:
- 45,388,000 Asthma medications
- 24,357,000 ADHD medications
- 9,614,000 Antidepressant medications
- 6,546,000 Antipsychotic medications
- 5,224,000 Antihypertensive medications
- 307,000 Sleep aids
- 424,00 Non-insulin diabetes medications
- 94,000 Statin (high-cholesterol) medications
These are startling figures that should make any parent shutter. What are the long-term implications? We don’t know.
These drugs being prescribed for children are not just some mild prescription drugs either. According to the Wall Street Journal, These include sleep aids, anti-depressants, ADD/ADHD drugs, anti-cholesterol drugs (statins), and diabetic medications All are very dangerous drugs.

Let’s look at Prozac for example. Prozac has a side effect profile larger than any other prescription available. Over 3,500 deaths have been attributed to Prozac. The approval study of Prozac involved 278 people over 8 weeks. No long-term studies were included. Additionally, Prozac dosing was designed for an average 170-pound individual. Do you know any children that weigh 170 pounds? I’ll answer for you. NO. Any child being dosed with Prozac is likely being overdosed, unless they weigh 170 pounds.
What about anti-depressants? Are there any studies that have looked at the long-term effects of anti-depressants over, let’s say, 40+ years? Again, a big NO is the answer to this question, too!
We are told that these medications are needed. Prozac is supposed to balance out the imbalances. Unfortunately, that’s a statement that has been made before that was eventually determined to be false. Heroin, Cocaine, PCP, Methadone, LSD, and even Xanax were all pharmaceuticals that were supposed to be safe and effective. All but Xanax are now controlled and/or illegal! In their book Break Your Prescribed Addiction, Billy Sahley, Ph.D., and Katherine Birkner, Ph.D., do a great job of pointing this out.
As a physician, the big question I ask is this: whom are we serving? Are we serving our system of medicine? Are we serving big pharmaceutical companies? Are we serving the FDA?
We should be serving our patients. We should be protecting our children.
Want to cut future costs of medicine? Let’s get our children off these medicines that mask their problems. Instead, let’s solve their health problems by finding their true source. Let’s listen to physicians like Dr. Danny Benjamin, a professor of pediatrics at Duke University who noted in the WSJ article that “parents must do more to question the safety of medicines their doctors prescribe.”
I think that’s advice that applies across the spectrum of patients. What are you taking? Why are you taking it? And here’s the big question in my book. Are the pharmaceuticals you are taking REALLY solving the problems that you have? Are they just a mask?
Toxic World
We live in a toxic world. There is no denying it. And concern over our exposure to toxins as a result of the BP Deepwater Horizon oil spill in the Gulf Coast are voiced to me on a daily basis.
Oil, however, is not the only toxin to which we can be exposed. Pesticides, insecticides, phthalates, and heavy metals are all toxins. Even prescription medicines are a source of toxins. Prescription drugs and their side effects are the third leading cause of death. They deplete us of vitamins and minerals and block metabolic pathways, the body’s internal communication highway. Vitamins, minerals, and even bioidentical hormones, if in excess, can be toxic to our bodies. The key is balance. When the body’s chemistry is balanced, then the body is able to work at its designed optimal level.
It’s obvious from the oil spill that toxins are a big issue. But what about reversing the damage done by toxins? Can it be done? Detoxification is a hot topic these days. The word toxin comes from the Greek word toxikon meaning arrow poison. This term was first introduced to medicine by Dr. Ludwig Briegger in 1888. Dr. Briegger determined that toxins equal poison to our body.
The idea of detoxification, however, goes back even further than the introduction of toxins to the medical vocabulary. It goes back to the creation of man. Every cell in our body performs detoxification. The most prominent detoxification organs are the liver, kidneys, and skin.
The idea of body cleansing (detoxification) goes back to the ancient Egyptians and Greeks. They understood that the body cannot continue to receive loads of toxins without eliminating them from the body. Remember, this was an Ancient Civilization, not yet exposed to the toxic world in which we currently live.
With the rise of modern civilization and Western medicine, physicians disregarded the idea of detoxification early in the 20th century. However, the body of evidence supporting detoxification remains unchanged. Evidence supports the fact that we are exposed to many toxins and these toxins accumulate and overwhelm our God-given detoxification systems.
The oil spill impact. Let’s talk about the immediate and future affects of the oil spill. What can we expect as a result of this toxic exposure? We can expect a significant impact in three areas: water, food, and air.
Water. The impact on the waster is already evident in the large “dead zones” resulting from clouds of methane gas in the Gulf waters. Eventually, the impact will spread to the Gulf’s tributaries as well as our drinking water.
Food. The impact on our food is not yet determined. But we can already see the impact on the cost of Gulf seafood. Based on our current knowledge of mercury toxicity and the fish industry, it is also reasonable to extrapolate that their will be some kind of effects from the oil on seafood from the Gulf and its contributory waters.
Air. The impact on the air is not yet determined. But if we look at the increased risk of lung disease in the Exxon Valdez oil spill clean-up crews, we can assume there might be similar issues with clean-up crews of the BP Horizon oil spill. Suspicious evidence is already appearing in the crops of the lower Gulf Coast states.
The immediate impact on the Gulf region’s wildlife is evident to all. Look to the long-term impact on wildlife in Alaska for clues as to what the Gulf Coast region may face for years to come.
What if the cure is worse than the disease? Cleaning the oil spill with chemical dispersants may be worse than letting Mother Nature clean up the mess all on her own. Let’s look at the long-term results of cleanup for another oil spill.
The 1978 oil spill off the cost of Normandy was cleaned up two different ways due to the large size of the spill and the economic impact of the spill area. Some areas of the oil spill were treated with chemical dispersants, while others were left untreated. The untreated areas had recovered in five years. Yes, you read that correctly. The ecosystems of the untreated oil spill areas returned to normal in just five years. Now here’s the really interesting part. The areas treated with chemical dispersants are STILL recovering. What if that’s the case with the chemical dispersant-treated areas in the Gulf? Oil is a biological compound and will be consumed by bacteria — though the time frame may be long.
Now here’s the real kicker. The chemical dispersant used in the Gulf oil spill is the same used in the Exxon Valdez spill in 1989 and was banned in England. Yes, you read that correctly. It’s been banned. But BP (which stands for British Petroleum) used it to clean up the oil spill. Ironic, isn’t it. It was banned in England, but is it okay for us?
Here’s a frightening fact: no person directly associated with the cleanup of the Exxon Valdez oil spill is still alive today. In fact, the average age of death was 51. From that, I think it’s safe to say that the toxic exposure that Gulf Coast residents are receiving is not safe for the body.
In 20 years, we will look back and know the long-term effects of this toxic exposure. We will know what diseases developed and what the secondary effects were on our drinking water and our crops. If we are already toxic from everyday exposure to chemicals, pesticides, pharmaceuticals, etc., then what will be the result of the added toxins from the Gulf oil spill?
The bottom line? We should not wait. We need to detoxify our bodies. Toxins, whether man-made or man-induced, were not intended to be inside our bodies. It doesn’t take a Ph.D., M.D., D.O. (just fill in your letters) to understand that. It is just common sense.
We need to support the God-created detoxification systems already present in our bodies with proper cleansing, targeted nutrition, conscientious reduction of our exposure to toxins, and, when needed, medically-supervised detoxification programs.

Cortisol
- Helps in responding and coping with stress, trauma, and infection

Testing hormones through saliva is backed by science. But don’t take my word for it. In fact, it is well supported in the medical literature and is the right thing to do. These articles are published in well-respected journals; and if you notice, they are not recent. Salivary testing of hormones has been well published in the medical literature for some time now.
Here are a few quotes from these studies:

- “…assessment of ovarian function…can be performed precisely with the saliva estradiol assay.”
- “…saliva collection has provided the medical and research community with an excellent medium for the monitoring of plasma steroid levels.”
Nowhere else in medicine do we blindly treat people without assessing a baseline and post treatment level(s). Balance is the key; not one individual hormone. Unfortunately, the medical field is very slow to learn and change.
From the Doctor’s Desk: Health and Wellness Defined
Definitions.
Health can best be defined as the absence of disease. Wellness is best defined as the existence of positive health. So health and wellness can be best defined as the absence of disease in the presence of positive health.
Why the focus on health and wellness these days? I think modern medicine gets a failing grade. Obesity is epidemic in the American culture today. One of my patients knew that her weight was not healthy. However, her previous physician told her that she should learn to live with her new heavier weight and maybe the weight would level out. That statement haunted her and led her to find a physician who offered her more hope and solutions.
Health and wellness cannot be achieved through a traditional, allopathic (Western modern medicine) medical approach. Why? Western modern medicine (we’ll call it traditional for our purposes) uses a disease-focused model utilizing pharmaceuticals. Pharmaceuticals block biochemical reactions, produce mitochondrial toxins, and deplete important nutrients. There is no positive health there.
In fact, the 4th – 6th leading cause of death is from prescription drugs (Mol Aspects Med. 2005 Aug-Oct;26(4-5):363-78). In contrast, functional medicine is a health and wellness model utilizing natural substances found in the body to enhance cellular processes. A health and wellness model looks to work with the body, to facilitate metabolic reactions and optimize physiologic function (The principles of metabolic therapy for heart disease. Heart, Lung and Circulation 2003; 12:S55-S62).
In some ways, the two are complementary; but in many ways, the two are not. I am not advocating a boycott of traditional medicine. In fact, I still practice some traditional medicine when disease exists.
The key is this — does disease exist or not? If disease doesn’t exist, and health and wellness or health restoration is your goal, then a functional or integrative approach is the way to go to facilitate and optimize physiologic function.
So, what is a functional medicine approach? To help define functional medicine, let’s look at a few examples.
The traditional medicine approach.
Metformin or Glucophage is a well-recognized drug used to treat diabetes. Metformin works to improve insulin sensitivity and thus facilitate glucose uptake inside the cells. Type II Diabetes is marked by very poor insulin sensitivity and thus blood sugar rises. Traditional medicine prescribes Metformin to provide a 13% improvement in insulin sensitivity.
Remember, pharmaceuticals block biochemical reactions. Metformin reduces folic acid and vitamin B12 and can elevate homocysteine. Elevated homocysteine levels increase blood clot risk (this is one of the ways that birth control pills increase blood clot risk). Diabetics and those with insulin resistance are already at an increased risk of blood clots. Can you see how the treatment is piling on in this situation?
The functional medicine approach.
Let’s contrast that with a functional medicine approach. Vitamin D deficiency is rampant today. Vitamin D deficiency has been implicated in heart failure, myocardial dysfunction, sudden cardiac death, and is required for normal insulin release and glucose control. Remember the 13% for metformin? Higher vitamin D levels resulted in a 60% improvement in insulin sensitivity (Chiu K., et al., “hypovitaminosis D is associated with insulin resistance and beta cell dysfunction,” Amer Jour Clin Nutr 2004).
Remember, functional medicine works with and facilitates the body’s functions. Vitamin D does not block any biochemical reactions, nor does it interfere with any. Thus, there is no negative effect comparable to Metformin. Now, too much of a good thing can be a problem. Too much Vitamin D can elevate calcium. Because of this, Vitamin D should be prescribed under the watchful eye of a physician.
Why do I do what I do?
Amazing results — as naturally as possible. This is why I practice functional medicine. This is why I created Seasons. A health and wellness model, through functional medicine, works with the body to enhance and optimize physiologic function. Health and health restoration can only be achieved by working with the body. Let’s get out of the way and let the body heal itself.
From The Doctor’s Desk: Wellness Is Not Band-Aid Medicine
So you wake up one day and you have symptoms. You select a doctor, make an appointment, recite your symptom list, receive a diagnosis, get a prescription, take the prescription and hope that the prescription gets rid of the symptoms.
But the question is this: Are you well?
Symptom relief medicine is great, but it is reactive medicine. I call this band-aid medicine. Just throw a band-aid on it in 5-10 minutes and ignore the real underlying cause. You can relieve symptoms with band-aids, but if the cause is left unchecked (usually an imbalance of some sort), then disease will be the result.
I like to use symptoms as clues to finding the cause. I call it proactive medicine. Symptoms are the result of imbalance. Disease is the result of ignoring the symptoms. It is a progressive cycle: imbalance, symptoms, disease.
Balance is the key. As I said above, symptoms are the result of imbalance. Medicine today has lost site of this. In the fast pace of the typical doctor’s office (even mine many years ago), all we have time for is symptom focus and treatment. There is no time for focus on cause.
You don’t have to look to far to see the importance of balance. Look at our bodies. They are all about balance: two eyes, two ears, two legs…you get the picture. This balance is by design. We should not lose sight of the fact that symptoms are the body crying out for help.
Symptoms reveal imbalances, and the imbalances can be quite diverse. They can include hormones: Estrogen/Progesterone, Thyroid/Cortisol, Growth Hormone/Cortisol, just to name a few. But imbalances can involve more than just our hormones. Neurotransmitters can be imbalanced. Have you ever heard of anxiety or depression? Neurotransmitters involve serotinin, glutamic acid, and nor-epinephrine just to name a few. And no, anxiety and/or depression are not the result of a SSRI deficiency.
Even Fats can be imbalanced. Everybody has heard of Omega 3. Omega 3’s are anti-inflammatory, they lower cholesterol and are good for the skin. But have you heard of Omega 6 fats. Omega 6’s are pro-inflammatory. Americans have excessive Omega 6’s in our high processed diets. The typical American diet is 24 to 1 ratio of Omega 6 to Omega 3. A healthy ratio should be 3 to 1.
Symptoms are the body’s way of asking for help. Let’s start listening.
From The Doctor’s Desk: Wrinkles and Hearts

I read that quote by President Garfield the other day and it occurred to me how important his statement was in my practice of medicine. What causes wrinkles? What causes the spirit to grow old? What can damage the heart? The answer is stress. Stress is not something that just exists. Stress is not just a term used to describe forces applied as in engineering. Stress is real and it affects our hearts. Stress kills.
What impact does stress have on the health of our heart?
- 43% of all adults suffer stress related adverse health effects.
- 75-90% of all visits to primary care physicians are stress-related.
- Stress is directly linked to heart disease according to a new study from University College London.
The interesting thing about stress? It’s not just external. Stress is both external and internal. There is stress of day-to-day life. And then there is the silent physiologic stress. The internal stress occurs in the form of obesity, food sensitivity, and inflammation to name a few.
How is stress affecting you? Ask your heart. Focus on keeping your heart healthy by limiting and relieving your stress this Valentine’s Day. While we can’t always eliminate the causes of stress in our life, we can control how we allow it to affect us!
My recommendations?
- Make good food choices to give your body the right kind of energy that lasts and helps you work and feel better.
- Get regular exercise. It boosts your metabolism, fights fatigue, and even elevates your mood helping you to cope with stress more effectively.
- Take time to meditate and pray.
- Take a break and relax whether it’s a soak in the tub or a good book.
Take care of your heart. That’s the best gift you can give those you love!

From The Doctor’s Desk: The Moral of the Story? Hormone Balance Key To Reducing Breast Cancer Potential.

I have four kids that range in age from four to eleven. One of my favorite things to do is read them a great story. So today, let’s talk about some very important stories and the moral each one presents.
The story about breast cancer potential has more characters than just estrogen and progesterone as we discussed in my last post. There are other hormones that are integral characters in that story also. As you will learn in this post, the moral to the breast cancer story is balance — balance between all the hormones in your body.
The Story On Dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) — Say That One Three Times Fast!
DHEA, a testosterone precursor, is a hormone produced by the adrenal glands and plays a part in breast protection. DHEA plays an important role in supporting the immune system. DHEA stimulates the production of good T-helper lymphocytes-1 and their associated good cytokines: interferon, Interleukin-2 and Tumor Necrosis Factor-beta. This is in contrast to the bad T-helper lymphocytes-2 and their bad cytokines. DHEA levels typically decline as we age. The decrease in DHEA levels are inversely correlated with increasing age-related disease. The strength of this correlation is yet to be determined, but the decline in immune system due to low DHEA is clear. So where does that leave DHEA? Individuals with low DHEA levels have more disease, and in this case, more breast cancer. The moral of this story? Low DHEA = a compromised immune system = breast cancer vulnerability.
The Story On Melatonin — The Sandman Hormone.
Melatonin is the hormone that regulates your sleep cycle. It is produced from the pineal gland in the brain. Low melatonin levels have been linked to breast cancer through the additional benefits of melatonin. Melatonin boosts the immune system, decreases estrogen and progesterone production, and acts as an anti-oxidant. Bench studies (non-human studies) have shown significant increase risks of breast cancer with low melatonin levels. Can you guess what happens as we age? Yes, you guessed it. Our melatonin levels fall. Ever talk to a post-menopausal woman? Most women of that age have sleep-related complaints. The moral of this story? Low melatonin = a compromised immune system = breast cancer vulnerability.
The Story on Thyroid — The Energy Hormone.
How about the thyroid hormone? The breast cancer link reaches to all hormones and everything seems to involve the thyroid these days! T4 (or better known as synthroid, levoxy, levothryoixine) is one of the most prescribed medicines today. But T4 is a very weak thyroid hormone. In fact, the body is looking for T3, a result of T4 to T3 conversion. The problem is that many individuals don’t convert T4 to T3 well. (Very often I see patients who have been on synthroid for years without symptomatic improvement even though their “levels” are said to be “good”. I digress. That’s a subject for another post. Let’s get back to the breast cancer link.) Low T4 and T3 levels result in low sex hormone binding globulin levels (SHBG). SHBG is how some hormones are transported. When SHBG levels drop, the free availability of the hormone it transports goes up. In this case, the levels of free estradiol go up. Remember the negative breast implications of estrogen dominance from last weeks post (link)? The moral of this story? Low thyroid = low SHBG = high estradiol = estrogen dominance = breast cancer vulnerability.
The Story On Insulin — The Sugar Storer
Finally, Insulin. Insulin’s primary role is in the storage of glucose. However, due to the large percentage of simple or refined sugars in our diet, insulin resistance has become a major epidemic, and, yes, insulin resistance increases the risk of breast cancer. How, you ask? High simple sugars leads to insulin resistance and PCOS (Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome). As a result, estrogen dominance and excess testosterone are produced which leads to weight gain. Remember that fat cells produce even more estrogen and estrogen stimulates breast cell growth (link). Young women will start their cycles at an earlier age and thus will increase their lifetime exposure to estrogen without appropriate progesterone balance. And to make matters worse, traditional therapy with birth control pills for these young women increases the breast cancer risk even further. The moral of this story? Insulin resistance = estrogen dominance = breast cancer vulnerability.
Change The Ending Of The Story.
Just because any of these hormone deficiencies might produce in you symptoms which you recognize in this post doesn’t mean that you are going to have breast cancer. However, the sooner you seek hormone balance, the quicker you are going to lower your breast cancer vulnerability/potential. As you can see, the hormonal symphony is what is important. Balance! When your hormones are balanced, the result is a symphony, and in turn, your body is in tune and makes beautiful music. But when your hormones are not balanced, then…well, you know the ending of that story.
